Landslip at Buddong Falls

A small section of the Hume & Hovell Track along the well-known Buddong Falls walk located between Tumbarumba and Talbingo has experienced a small landslip and has impacted the Hume & Hovell Track corridor.

This section of track has recently been reopened (see news story HERE) after severe bushfire damage in 2019/2020. However, shortly after the track was reinstated, a minor landslip has cut through a section of track just below the lower Buddong Falls making it difficult for walkers to pass by.

The track will remain open, but walkers need to be aware of this issue and be prepared when attempting to walk on this section of the track. Maneuvering past this landslip is possible, if care and caution is taken.

The damage has occurred just below the lower falls, in the Kosciuszko National Park which is marked by the red ‘X’ on the map below. The landslip is approximately 2.5m deep and 5m across, as seen in the images below.

The track corridor along Buddong Falls is quite steep and the impacts of the 2019/2020 bushfires and subsequent heavy rainfall has caused a change to the landscape. The softer topsoil with exposed forest floor has been open to the elements which has resulted in this landslip.

Assessments have already been undertaken and an action plan is underway to make the area safe and limit further erosion impacts. The track correction activities are expected to begin in the coming weeks, but we are urging walkers to be careful if attempting to cross this part of the track.
