Track Condition Update October 2023

The maintenance team have been hard at work, particularly using shovels and rake hoes, to undertake benching work and creating a level surface for walkers. This work is necessary to correct the impacts of erosion which can cause the track to be washed away and become uneven. Benching has been undertaken in various locations from Buddong Falls through to Mannus Lake.

The team has also continued to keep the track corridor clear, cutting saplings, removing blackberry bushes and debris, cutting back overgrowth, whipper snipping down the long grass and clearing vegetation.

New track markers have also been installed, to ensure it is identifiable and easy to follow. The bridge replacement program is nearing completion, with over 110 new bridges now installed through both the fire-damaged track and the remaining open sections.

The maintenance team have been particulary focused on the reinstatement of the Hume & Hovell Ultra Race section of Track in preparation of their event on the 7th & 8th October, and most recently been through the following areas:

  • Buddong Falls to Boraig

  • Junction Camground to Henry Angel

  • Henry Angel to Mannus Lake

If you are planning on walking on the Hume & Hovell Track and would like to check the condition of the Track, please reach out to us via the Contact Us page.

The images above show the build and installation of a new boardwalk at Mannus Lake.

The below images show work that has been completed on the Track corridor, including mowing, snipping, trimming and the installation of new marker posts.

Track maintenance work continues and is approached on a priority basis, but we encourage all users to complete a ‘report a track defect’ form via our Contact Us page on our website if there are any issues found that need actioning.

Regardless of the Track condition, we also encourage our walkers to be prepared when exploring the Hume and Hovell Track, please download mapping resources to assist with navigation, take plenty of water or be carrying a water filtration option, take a satellite phone or personal locator beacon (PLB), notify someone of your trip or register your trip with us and carry first aid supplies.
