Col Daniel Bridge Reopens

One of the most well-known bridges on the Hume & Hovell Track has now been reinstated. The Col Daniel bridge is located 5km from Henry Angel Trackhead heading south towards Mannus Lake Campsite. This is an exceptionally popular section that many visitors enjoy for a day trip or family walk.

Flooding in October 2020 caused damage to the original suspension bridge which underwent repairs to restore walker access. The suspension bridge then experienced catastrophic flood damage in November 2021 which completely destroyed the Col Daniel Bridge. After a comprehensive insurance process, environmental impact study and consideration by Crown Lands and Snowy Valleys Council the replacement was able to get underway.

An evaluation of the available options determined that a new structure using the same deck design that is being implemented across the Track could be constructed at the site, which would offer increased resistance to future flooding. The new 16m bridge was conceptualised, engineered and has now been installed. The new bridge has a raised platform to improve resistance to future flooding events and has a sturdy walkway with reinforcements for ongoing longevity.

Site investigations commenced in February this year with construction commencing in early August 2022, images of the build progress can be seen below. The bridge was completed on the 9th September 2022.

Walkers are encouraged to take a day trip and visit this exciting new addition to the Hume & Hovell Track while exploring the Burra Creek Precinct which is rich in Gold Mining history.
